How to Close Up Your Home Before Heading Out of Town

by | Home Protection | 4 comments

Planning a trip away from home can be exciting, but ensuring you’ve locked and closed everything can be hectic as you’re running out the door. We’ve compiled a checklist of the top seven things to check before heading out on vacation to save yourself a headache, and maybe even an insurance claim.

1. Secure your windows and doors

Start by checking all windows and doors to make sure they are locked and secured. If you have sliding glass doors, put a wooden dowel in the track to prevent them from being opened. You may also consider installing a security bar or adding extra locks to your windows for added protection in order to prevent unwanted visitors inside your home.

2. Unplug electrical devices

Unplugging electrical devices such as televisions, computers, and other electronics can prevent a potential fire hazard. This also helps to save energy and lower your electricity bill while you are gone.

3. Turn off the water

Turn off the main water valve to prevent any potential leaks or water damage in your home while you’re away. In the winter months, we also suggest draining your pipes to prevent them from bursting and requiring an insurance claim in the event of a cold spell. Taking steps to avoid a insurance claim for freezing pipes is important, because some claims may not be covered depending on circumstances.

4. Set your thermostat

If you are going to be gone for an extended period of time, consider shutting off your HVAC unit completely in order to save on energy.

If you are going for a shorter amount of time, we suggest setting your thermostat to a comfortable level, but one that will still reduce your energy usage while you are gone.

5. Secure your valuables

If you have valuables such as jewelry or important documents, consider putting them in a safe deposit box or a secure location.

6. Use lights

Consider using lights on timers to give the impression that someone is home. This can be a great deterrent for potential unwanted visitors.

7. Ask a friend to collect your mail

Having a friend stop  by your home to get your mail can  help prevent strangers from knowing you are not home for a long period of time, reducing the risk of a break in. Having a friend popping by your house regularly, they can also ensure nothing looks out of place.

Having a great plan in place before leaving for vacation will give you the peace of mind when you are on vacation that your home is safe. With that said, having the right home insurance plan in place can add an extra layer of safety and security for your home whether you’re there, or away.
